Containership Under Quarantine at Santos Due to COVID-19 Cases
The containership 'Barbara' is currently under quarantine at Santos Anchorage following the confirmation of ten crew members testing positive for COVID-19. The incident came to light on May 9, after the vessel docked at Santos on May 1 and subsequently moved to the anchorage on May 2 to finalize cargo operations. Fortunately, none of the affected crew members require intensive medical care or hospitalization, and most are asymptomatic. This precautionary measure will remain in effect until May 17 to ensure the safety of all personnel aboard.
COVID-19 Alert: Two Crew Members of the Barbara Test Positive in Santos Port
On May 1, 2020, two crew members aboard the vessel 'Barbara' tested positive for COVID-19 upon their arrival at the port of Santos, located in São Paulo, Brazil. The crew displayed symptoms before docking, prompting comprehensive testing for all personnel on the ship. Following the positive test results, the Port of Santos promptly alerted Anvisa in Itajaí regarding these cases. The Barbara had previously berthed at both APM Terminals and Portonave, with both docks having received clearance based on Anvisa’s approval for operations conducted on April 29 and 30. According to APM, there was no prior indication from Anvisa about any crew members showing flu-like symptoms that might pose a risk to operations at the Itajaí Port complex, as this information was only communicated once the freighter reached Santos. The affected crew members were part of the engine room team, thereby minimizing potential exposure to other workers in Itajaí. Anvisa authorized and cleared the vessel's activities, confirming that crew members had no contact with port workers in Navegantes. Monitoring protocols are currently in place for anyone who boarded the vessel, and no symptoms have been reported among them thus far. As of May 8, the Barbara remains anchored at Santos, under observation for the safety of all involved.
