On November 11, 2015, the container vessel MSC Gemma experienced a mishap while navigating the Zandvliet Lock in Antwerp. The incident occurred at approximately 7:12 PM as the ship was being guided into the lock by two harbor tugs. At the time, the MSC Gemma was departing the port with a cargo of only 400 containers onboard, exhibiting a shallow draft of eight meters. This likely contributed to the vessel's vulnerability, as it was struck by winds measured at five Beaufort. The considerable force pushed the ship against the massive rubber fender at the entrance of the lock, resulting in significant damage to the starboard side of the hull. A breach approximately three meters long and between 1.5 to two meters wide was torn above the waterline. Following the incident, the MSC Gemma was towed into the Scheldt River, rotated at the Schaar van Ouden Doel, and subsequently directed to berth 408 at the Churchill quay for necessary repairs.
