The Hagrid: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On September 1, 2025, the cargo ship 'Hagrid', carrying 13 crew members and under the command of a Turkish captain, ran aground at the northern Evia port of Mantoudi. The vessel had recently loaded a significant cargo of 5,002 tons of magnesite, destined for Ireland, when it became lodged on the sandy seabed of the port. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the crew, and authorities confirmed that there were no leaks or pollution resulting from the incident, although the pier sustained minor damage. In response, state authorities began to explore options for refloating the vessel. Meanwhile, the Mantoudi Port Station has initiated a preliminary inquiry into the grounding. The 34-year-old captain was apprehended and faces charges under article 277 of the Greek Criminal Code for 'Causing a shipwreck' and article 378 for 'Damage to another’s property.' The Hagrid has been barred from leaving port until a seaworthiness certificate is provided by the supervising classification society. On May 6, two Malta-flagged cargo vessels owned by Palmali Maritime Company were detained at the port of Oristano. The ships, 'General Shiklinsky' (IMO: 9437347) and 'Khosrov Bey', both registered with a gross tonnage of 4109 gt, were held under the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU) guidelines. Their detention follows the arrest of Mubariz Mansimov Gurbanoğlu, the chairman of the company's board, who has been implicated in serious allegations concerning the FETÖ Terrorist Organization. During inspections carried out by Port State Control (PSC) Inspectors, significant irregularities were discovered, raising concerns about compliance with international safety regulations. The detention was formally reported due to a claim from an international creditor against Palmali Maritime Company, which prompted intervention by the Italian Maritime Authority. The 'General Shiklinsky' was involved in transporting wheat, while the 'Khosrov Bey' was responsible for corn shipments. Both vessels are currently seized by the Civil Court of Oristano, pending legal proceedings initiated by a creditor related to unpaid fuel supplies. In light of the shipowner's financial difficulties, the Port Authority of Oristano, in partnership with Caritas, is making substantial efforts to alleviate the situation for the 29 crew members on board, providing them with food and essential supplies. On June 22, the Port Authority distributed items donated by diocesan Caritas to help ensure that the crew's basic needs are met during this challenging period.
