Philippine Coast Guard Strengthens Security Amid Rising Maritime Crimes

Nov 29, 2023 11:24

In response to escalating maritime crime incidents, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has ramped up its anti-crime operations as the holiday season approaches, when maritime traffic typically surges. Acting on the orders of Transportation Secretary, commanders from 15 PCG districts have been instructed to enhance their presence at key ports, harbors, and waterways nationwide to bolster maritime security and ensure public safety. This initiative aims to significantly reduce, if not entirely eliminate, crime on the seas during this busy period. The PCG's announcement came just days after a series of brazen robberies occurred at the Manila International Container Terminal and the Manila Bay Anchorage Area on November 25, 2023. During these incidents, critical safety gear and vessel equipment were reportedly stolen from vessels, including the 'G. Crown' and 'Hansa Colombo'. Specifically, the 'Hansa Colombo' was targeted and boarded by thieves at position 14 35 44 N, 120 51 32 E, around 6:45 PM UTC on the same day. In the aftermath, the Philippine Coast Guard promptly responded, providing necessary assistance and launching an investigation into the robbery. By early morning on November 26, PCG officials had conducted an initial inquiry with the crew, collected vital statements, and documented the stolen items from the 'Hansa Colombo' to aid in their ongoing investigation.
