Happy Aras Bulk Carrier Evacuated After Grounding in Black Sea

Jan 14, 2026 21:55

On January 3, 2026, the bulk carrier 'Happy Aras' ran aground off the coast, approximately 30 meters from shore near Cape Zhelezny Rog in the Temryuk District of Krasnodar Krai, Black Sea. The ship, which had a crew of 14, including three Turkish nationals, experienced distress after drifting south of the Kerch Strait and taking on water following a severe storm that had been forecasted for the region the day prior. Winds in the area reached speeds of 20 to 25 meters per second, likely contributing to the ship's misfortune. Thankfully, the crew was safely evacuated in good health, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Turkey’s Maritime SAR Coordination Center. Since January 2, the watercraft has been recorded as 'not under command.' The vessel's Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal had been intermittently transmitting since December 30, 2025, when 'Happy Aras' departed from Varna, bound for Novorossiysk without cargo. Although the ship did carry reserves of petroleum products, no oil spill has been detected at this point. To ensure environmental safety, an oil boom has been deployed around the vessel, and the situation is being closely monitored by the Black Sea-Azov Marine Administration of Rosprirodnadzor. Prior to this incident, the 'Happy Aras' faced scrutiny for safety violations, having been detained on December 22, 2025, in Canakkale for 11 deficiencies, and at Novorossiysk in October due to eight deficiencies. The bulk carrier, valued at approximately $1.5 million, is managed by Turkey's Mutlu Shipping and has a troubling history of port state control issues since 2018. Notably, on March 22, 2023, it previously ran aground in Murdala Bay while en route to Mersin with a cargo of 4,184 tons of soybeans. It was successfully refloated on June 13, 2023, after lightening its fuel and cargo with the assistance of tug 'Kocabas 1' (MMSI: 271010019). Happy Aras Faces Third Detention in Just Over a Year

Dec 28, 2025 23:58

The bulk carrier 'Happy Aras' has been detained for the third time within a span of 14 months, following a recent incident in Canakkale, Turkiye on December 22, 2023. The vessel was found to have 11 deficiencies during the inspection, with eight of these classified as serious enough to warrant detention. The specific issues included: 1) Safety of navigation - Missing charts 2) Safety of navigation - Outdated nautical publications 3) Fire safety - Deficiencies in the fire detection and alarm system 4) Fire safety - Unsafe means of escape 5) Emergency systems - Non-compliance of emergency power supply and generator 6) Emergency systems - Inadequate emergency lighting, batteries, and switches 7) Living and working conditions - Gas instruments not meeting requirements 8) ISM - Non-compliance with ISM certificate requirements. After being detained, the 'Happy Aras' was released on December 23 and promptly set sail for Icdas. This latest detention follows two previous incidents: one on October 5, 2023, in Novorossiysk where it was held for three days due to nine recorded deficiencies, and another on October 18, 2024, when it was detained for a week at the same port. These recurring issues raise concerns about the vessel's operational compliance and commitment to maritime safety standards.

Second Detention of 'Happy Aras' in Novorossiysk Within a Year

Oct 10, 2025 09:00

On October 5, 2025, the vessel 'Happy Aras' faced its second detention in Novorossiysk, underscoring ongoing compliance issues. Authorities identified eight significant deficiencies during the inspection, including failures related to radio communications, navigation safety features, and labor conditions. Specifically, the deficiencies included: 1) Inadequate reserve energy source for radio communications, 2) Non-compliant navigation lights, shapes, and sound signals, 3) Insufficient monitoring of the voyage or passage plan, 4) Unsafe electrical conditions, 5) Non-compliant winches and capstans, 6) Inadequate facilities for laundry and locker space, 7) Unsafe pilot ladder arrangements, and 8) Lifeboat deficiencies. After a two-day inspection, the vessel was released on October 7, 2025, and subsequently anchored off the port. This incident marks a repeat of the previous detention on October 18, 2024, where 'Happy Aras' was held for five days due to seven noted deficiencies. The vessel's repeated issues highlight the critical need for enhanced safety and compliance measures within the maritime industry.
