Tragic Injury Aboard the Happy Buccaneer: Sailor Undergoes Leg Amputation
In a severe accident on February 23, a 55-year-old Portuguese sailor faced a life-changing injury while working on the heavy lift vessel, "Happy Buccaneer." The incident occurred when a spreader beam unintentionally fell, resulting in a crush injury that necessitated the amputation of his leg. Alongside him, a Filipino crew member sustained multiple injuries, including compound fractures in his leg and a broken pelvis. Immediate medical attention was provided by the Roy Hill emergency response team, who were on site at the time of the incident. Both injured sailors were subsequently airlifted to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service for further treatment.
