In a remarkable turn of events, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has successfully located the captain of the 'Harbour Neptune' after an extensive 18-hour search. The 42-year-old captain was discovered adrift approximately 12.8 nautical miles off Pulau Panjang on April 19, 2020, at 5:45 PM, following a distress report from a shipping agent. The rescue operation was initiated after the captain was reported missing from his cabin. The vessel was en route from Pasir Gudang to Port Klang when the captain vanished around 10 PM on April 18. Crew members raised the alarm as the ship was preparing to dock at Pintu Gedung, Pulau Indah. Fortunately, the captain was wearing a life vest when he was rescued and brought back to safety at the jetty. Since March 18, all crew members, including the captain, had been unable to disembark from the vessel due to restrictions associated with the movement control order (MCO). During the rescue, the captain, who exclusively operates within the Malaysian and Indonesian maritime routes, stated he had limited experience in navigating beyond the littoral borders. Thankfully, health screenings revealed that he was free from Covid-19, and crew members were also tested negative for the virus. However, the captain will need to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Ongoing investigations are being conducted to determine if any criminal elements contributed to the incident of the captain going overboard.
