Container Ship Aids in Dramatic Rescue of 70 Migrants Off Crete

On November 21, 2021, a distressing situation unfolded 30 nautical miles southwest of Paleochora, Chania, when a semi-submerged sailing vessel was discovered. The Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center swiftly organized a comprehensive operation involving patrol boats and aircraft to assist those in peril. In total, 70 individuals were rescued, comprising 61 men, four women, and five minors. Tragically, one male body was recovered during the operation. The container ship 'Harrison', which was in the vicinity while making its journey from Ashdod to Koper, played a pivotal role in the rescue efforts, facilitating the transport of survivors to a nearby lifeboat. These individuals were then taken to the port of Paleochora, where first aid was administered in collaboration with the Red Cross of Chania-Kissamos. Three individuals, including two men and one woman, were urgently transported by ambulance to the General Hospital in Chania for further medical care. Meanwhile, the recovered body was respectfully sent to the Chania Mortuary. The remaining survivors were bused to a secure accommodation facility provided by the Municipality of Kantanos Selinos. The Central Port Authority of Chania has launched a preliminary investigation into the incident to further understand the circumstances surrounding the rescue.
