On October 14, 2023, the cargo vessel 'Sophia Z', sailing from Varna to Barcelona, experienced a rudder malfunction while navigating the Bosphorus Strait near Umuryeri. The Istanbul Vessel Traffic and Harbour (VTH) Center coordinated a swift response to the situation, deploying several tugs including 'Kurtarma 7' (IMO: 9598608), 'Kurtarma 8' (IMO: 9598610), and 'Kurtarma 9' (IMO: 9598581), along with the lifeboat 'Kiyem 8', a pilot, and diving teams to assist the vessel. Following the incident, 'Sophia Z' was towed to Ahırkapı anchorage for necessary repairs. The ship managed to resume its journey around 8:30 p.m. and subsequently dropped anchor off Istanbul at approximately 10 p.m. in position 40° 59.08'N, 028° 57.83'E.
