Cargo Ship 'San Porfyrios' Detained for Breaching Ukrainian Laws
In a significant enforcement action, Ukrainian border guards have apprehended the cargo ship 'San Porfyrios' for unauthorized visits to multiple ports in Crimea. This detention occurred after the maritime security team of Odesa intercepted the vessel, which had previously altered its name and flag. Previously known as 'Sava Lake,' the ship had been operating under the Panamanian flag and was reported to have visited Crimea's ports during 2014 and 2015—activities which Ukraine has deemed illegal due to its established restrictions on maritime access to this region. The vessel was intercepted in Ukrainian waters of the Danube River while en route from Galati, where it had departed on July 30, 2017, with its sights set on Corinth, due to dock on August 4. Notably, the crew structure of the ship has been inconsistent, featuring several captain changes during its illegal port calls. However, one advisor to the captain consistently reboarded the ship, maintaining ties with the maritime operations that flouted Ukrainian law.
