Working Conditions Aboard the Hc-Energy

On February 8, 2016, the U.S. Coast Guard's 17th District watchstanders responded to an urgent call from the fishing vessel, Cemtex Venture, reporting that two crew members had sustained injuries from falls during severe weather conditions. After consulting with the duty flight surgeon, it was determined that both individuals required advanced medical care. The decision was made to redirect the vessel towards Kodiak Island, enabling the Coast Guard helicopters to reach them more effectively. In the afternoon, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, along with an HC-130 airplane crew, was dispatched from Kodiak. Approximately 220 miles southeast of Kodiak, the helicopter successfully hoisted the injured crew members, a 32-year-old man and a 28-year-old man, before transporting them to safety. Upon reaching Kodiak, emergency medical services were waiting; one patient was airlifted by LifeMed to Anchorage, while the other was taken to Kodiak Providence Hospital. At the time of the rescue, conditions at sea included winds gusting at 18 mph and waves reaching 19 feet.
