Serious Collision Near Zhoushan: Bulk Carrier and Container Ship Incident

Dec 07, 2013 07:28

In a significant maritime incident on the morning of December 6, 2013, a collision occurred between the bulk carrier Jia Li Hai and the container ship Xiumei Tianjin approximately 3.5 nautical miles south of Zhoushan, located in the Ningbo area of the East China Sea. The Xiumei Tianjin, while sailing towards Shanghai, collided with the port side of the Jia Li Hai, striking the hold area close to the superstructure. This impact resulted in water ingress, creating a serious risk of sinking for the bulk carrier. In response to the emergency, rescue vessels and tugs were deployed to assist and towed the damaged Jia Li Hai toward shallow waters. Reports indicate that both vessels may have been kept coupled during the towing operation to prevent further water ingress. Fortunately, the Jia Li Hai was eventually stabilized in shallow waters off Tangdun. As of 0130 UTC on December 7, the last AIS signal from the Jia Li Hai was registered, revealing at least three rescue and pollution control vessels in close proximity, though the exact condition of the bulk carrier remains unclear. Meanwhile, the Xiumei Tianjin has successfully docked at the Meishan island container terminal after the incident. The Jia Li Hai was transporting over 60,000 tons of coal at the time of the collision.
