Successful Completion of 'Hein' Dredger Salvage Operation
The salvage mission for the dredger 'Hein' officially wrapped up on August 1, marking a significant milestone in the recovery effort. The vessel is currently moored starboard side at the north pier in Brake, while its ship loader has been safely transferred to the middle pier. The sheerleg crane 'Enak' was instrumental in lifting the ship loader onto the middle pier, ensuring a secure environment for further operations. Looking ahead, a portion of the conveyor bridge is slated for dismantling, and plans are in motion to raise the submerged sections of the pier from the bottom of the Weser River. On the afternoon of August 2, 'Hein' set sail for repairs at the Lloyd Yard in Bremerhaven, where it will undergo necessary fixes for two hull breaches and damage to the bow. Meanwhile, authorities from the water police have initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the vessel's route deviation and subsequent collision with the quay. As of yet, the investigation has not yielded any conclusive results. Dredger 'Hein' Remains Grounded at Jetty
As of August 1, the dredger 'Hein' continues to be stranded between a wooden and a concrete pier, with no significant progress in the salvage operation. The sheerleg crane 'BHV Athlet' has departed the scene, and in its place, the sheerleg crane 'Enak' has taken over the salvage efforts. Recovery operations are anticipated to extend over several more days. The salvage team plans to incorporate shore-based mobile cranes into their strategy, necessitating comprehensive assessments of the quayside before proceeding. Dredger 'Hein' Remains Trapped Under Collapsed Crane in Brake
As of July 29, the dredger 'Hein' continues to face challenges in Brake, remaining immobilized at position 53° 21' N 008° 30' E. The vessel initially compromised a jetty under unclear circumstances before crashing into the quay's edge. This incident led to the collapse of a loading crane that fell onto the dredger, intensifying the recovery efforts. To address this complex situation, a specialized company is employing the sheerleg 'BHV Athlet' (MMSI: 211523490) to carefully separate the crane's head from the vessel’s deck, aided by shore-based mobile cranes. Salvage operations are expected to unfold over the coming days, given the entwined nature of the dredger, conveyor system, and overturned crane. In order to mitigate further damage to both the vessel and the port infrastructure, extensive securing of the affected structures is necessary. These preparatory measures are crucial for ensuring a safe and organized recovery process. Significant damage has been reported to the jetty's steel and wood structure, with the crane runway beam almost entirely destroyed. The loading crane itself buckled under the impact and obliterated upon colliding with the dredger. Additionally, the quay's conveyor belt and housing have suffered severe structural damage. A hydraulic line connected to the crane was ruptured, resulting in a minor hydraulic fluid leak into the port basin. Fortunately, this spill was swiftly contained and removed on July 25 by the Brake Volunteer Fire Department and the NLWKN (Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection, and Nature Conservation). Upon inspection, several cracks were found in the bow area of the 'Hein,' prompting the Ship Safety Department of the Maritime Accident Insurance Association (SEE BG) to issue an immediate sailing ban. Consequently, the affected port area has been closed to shipping activities, although operations in other port sections continue unaffected.
