Grounded Vessel Disrupts Kiel Canal Traffic
On July 18, 2017, at approximately 1:20 p.m., the cargo ship "Heinrich Schepers" experienced engine failure while navigating the Kiel Canal, en route from Hamburg to Kotka. The incident occurred at canal kilometer 28, just before the Grünental Bridge, causing the vessel to drift off course and collide with the embankment on the northern side of the canal. An emergency anchoring maneuver helped mitigate the impact; however, the ship ended up lying perpendicular to the fairway, effectively halting all shipping traffic in the Dükerswisch/Fischerhütte area. By 2:15 p.m., the crew successfully restarted the engine, allowing the "Heinrich Schepers" to extricate itself from the embankment and proceed eastward towards Fischerhütte, where it awaited police intervention. After preliminary investigations, the vessel was permitted to continue its journey to Kiel, arriving at the port by 9:30 p.m. After further inspections, the "Heinrich Schepers" set sail once again on July 19 at 3:00 a.m., with an estimated arrival in Kotka scheduled for July 22 at 4:00 a.m. For further information, a German report and photos are available at the following links: 1.
