Fog-Related Collision in Kiel Canal: Container Ship 'Heinrich Ehler' Allides with Lock Dolphins

Nov 14, 2016 12:20

On November 12, 2016, at 8:40 a.m., the container ship 'Heinrich Ehler' encountered a navigational mishap while weaving through thick fog near the southern lock of the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau. During its approach, the vessel veered off course and collided with the protective dolphins, resulting in significant damage to a sturdy wooden fender. The incident occurred under visibility conditions dropping below 100 meters, compounded by a misinterpretation of the electronic navigation chart. The estimated cost of damages is around €20,000, with plans to replace the damaged fender scheduled for November 14. Fortunately, the 'Heinrich Ehler' only sustained minor scrapes and was able to resume its journey shortly after the incident, departing from Kiel for Hamburg, which it reached by 1 a.m. on November 13. It followed up with a sail to Eurogate Bremerhaven on November 14 at 7 a.m. For more details, you can view the German report and accompanying photo at: http://www.kn-online.de/News/Nachrichten-aus-Kiel/Nebel-Schiff-rammte-Holzfender-in-Holtenau

Maersk-Seago Introduces Weekly Baltic Feeder Amid Service Adjustments

Oct 12, 2013 07:44

Maersk-Seago is set to revamp its operations in the Baltic Sea with significant alterations aimed at enhancing trade in the region. As part of this strategy, the company is transitioning its service framework for the Baltic, and particularly for St Petersburg, from a 'summer pattern' to a more efficient 'winter pattern'. This change is designed to accommodate seasonal fruit imports from citrus-exporting nations while also addressing the challenges posed by the annual icing season. Consequently, some Baltic ports will now require ice-classed vessels to ensure safe navigation. To adapt to these seasonal demands, Maersk will discontinue its 'KNSM' service, replacing it with two direct links connecting Morocco to St Petersburg. Additionally, the Baltic leg of the 'CRX' service will be suspended starting in mid-October since it does not utilize ice-classed ships. In response to these modifications, Maersk-Seago plans to launch a new weekly Baltic Feeder route from Bremerhaven to Kotka and St Petersburg, commencing operations on 16 October. The service will feature the 1,404 TEU ice-classed vessel HEINRICH EHLER, alongside a second vessel yet to be announced, operating on a 14-day round trip.
