Notable Maritime Incident on the Weser River
On February 15, 2013, at approximately 1 p.m., the cargo vessel "Helga" was involved in a significant maritime collision on the lower Weser. The vessel was struck by the "Wittenbergen," which was maneuvering from the SB III berth in Brake to the North Pier under adverse conditions of dense fog. As the "Wittenbergen" was traveling northward and operating close to the shoreline, the captain miscalculated the speed of the flood current. This misjudgment caused the ship to veer to starboard and drift into the fairway where the "Helga" was navigating toward Bremen. Unfortunately, the crew of the "Helga" was unable to avoid a collision. Both vessels sustained minor damages. Following the incident, the "Helga" continued its journey and successfully docked at Bremen's Industry Port at 3:45 p.m. Subsequently, local police initiated an inquiry into the incident, collaborating with authorities in Brake, while the master of the "Wittenbergen" was required to pay a safety deposit.
