Helgafell Container Incident in North Atlantic
On February 20, 2016, the cargo vessel 'Helgafell' encountered a challenging situation in the North Atlantic, losing 10 containers overboard while navigating from Reykjavik and Vestmannaeyjar to Immingham. The ship encountered turbulent seas, causing some containers to sink swiftly, while others sustained damage during the storm. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) was notified of the incident at 2:35 PM. In response to the situation, 'Helgafell' made a stop at Oyrareingir in the Faroe Islands on February 21 at 8:00 AM to stabilize and secure the remaining cargo. The vessel resumed its journey on February 22 with a revised estimated time of arrival (ETA) in Immingham set for February 23 at 5:00 PM.
