On April 25, 2020, K.M. Gireesh Kumar, the Second Officer aboard the tanker 'Ulrijken', finally received permission to disembark at Chennai port after an arduous four-month deployment. Initially contracted for six months, Gireesh’s tenure aboard the vessel extended well beyond the intended duration due to the unprecedented disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed his return home since the end of his contract in January. Seeking a resolution, Gireesh reached out to the Director General of Shipping, prompting crucial interventions. Port authorities, including Port Health Officer Senthilnathan and Deputy Port Conservator Sitaram Parhi, collaborated to facilitate the sign-off process, ensuring that the officer could safely complete his service and return home.
