Container Ship Successfully Unloaded After Separation From Tanker
On June 17, the tanker 'Burgan' was moved from its previous position at the dry dock jetty to CUFL Jetty for necessary repairs. These temporary repair operations were set to begin on June 18. Meanwhile, the container ship 'X-Press Mahananda' made its approach to Jetty No. 13 at Chittagong Port on June 16, where it was towed by a port tug and began unloading its cargo of containers. The vessel encountered severe damage, with breaches reported in multiple sections of its bow. After intense efforts spanning 48 hours, a marine department team successfully separated the 'Burgan' and 'X-Press Mahananda' on June 16 at 08:30 AM. Initial separation attempts had proven unsuccessful, prompting the vessels to be shifted to the dry dock jetty to facilitate clear passage for other ships. Prior to their detachment, ballast water was meticulously drained from both vessels. The 'X-Press Mahananda' was positioned at Dock 11, while the 'Burgan' remained at Dolphin Jetty 7. Following its unloading, the 'X-Press Mahananda' was relocated from berth RM/8 to berth CUFLJ to prepare for repairs scheduled for completion on June 27. After completing temporary repairs, the vessel departed from Singapore on July 6, setting course for Qinzhou. It then docked in Qinzhou for permanent repairs from July 21 to September 29 before arriving in Nansha as its first port of call post-repair on October 11. The 'Burgan', on the other hand, underwent repairs in Dubai from July 10 until September 14 and returned to Chittagong on October 3.
Serious Collision at Chattogram Port: M/V Burgan and X-press Mahananda Collide
On June 14, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., a significant maritime incident unfolded at Chattogram Port involving the unloaded tanker m/v 'Burgan' and the container vessel 'X-press Mahananda', which was making its way into the port from Colombo, Sri Lanka. The collision occurred in the Karnaphuli channel, specifically near Guptaband point, as the two vessels collided bow-on-bow close to the Chittagong Dry Dock and the Boat Club. The 'X-press Mahananda', laden with 700 containers, faced considerable damage to its bow alongside the 'Burgan', which was in ballast as it departed the port. Following the accident, operations at Chattogram Port were temporarily halted, resuming four hours later as efforts were made to clear the channel. The two ships were safely separated and towed to a nearby dock located on Sea Beach Road along the Karnaphuli River around 12:30 p.m. Ultimately, the ships were fully separated on June 16. The container ship is scheduled to proceed to a container terminal to offload its cargo, while the 'Burgan' will undertake emergency repairs before setting sail for Kuwait to restore its seaworthiness.
