Pasha Hawaii Wraps Up Horizon Spirit's Mission in Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief

Feb 18, 2018 09:23

Pasha Hawaii has officially completed the deployment of its U.S. Jones Act vessel, HORIZON SPIRIT, which made headlines for setting a world record by transporting over 800 containers containing more than 15 million bottles of water during its inaugural humanitarian mission to Puerto Rico. This remarkable effort provided vital support for hurricane relief and rebuilding in the region. Based in Honolulu, HI, Pasha Hawaii has announced that the HORIZON SPIRIT has returned to the U.S. West Coast after successfully managing substantial cargo volumes tailored for hurricane recovery operations. With the capability now restored to handle typical volumes through the established U.S. Jones Act fleet servicing Puerto Rico, the HORIZON SPIRIT will transition to a drydock reserve role within Pasha Hawaii's operations, particularly for the key trade route between the mainland and Hawaii. This move will allow the HORIZON RELIANCE to enter a scheduled regulatory dry-dock maintenance at a U.S. West Coast shipyard, ensuring that Pasha Hawaii's fleet remains in optimal condition for future service.

In an impressive display of maritime rescue operations, a helicopter crew from the San Diego Coast Guard successfully airlifted the captain of the "Horizon Spirit" on the night of June 5, 2012. The container ship was on a voyage from Los Angeles to Honolulu, with an estimated time of arrival set for June 7, when the captain fell ill approximately 460 miles off the coast of San Diego. After the emergency airlifting, the captain was transported to the amphibious assault ship "Peleliu," where he spent the night under observation. Following stabilization of his condition, he was flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla on the morning of June 6 for further medical care. Notably, the rescue mission utilized an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, which refueled at the Peleliu to reach the distressed vessel.
