Collision of Container Ships Near Chattogram Port Raises Safety Concerns

May 05, 2026 09:58

On May 1, 2026, at 9:30 AM, the container vessel 'Maersk Chattogram' (IMO: 9761023) collided with the 'HR Turag', which was en route from Singapore, at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port. The incident took place prior to the beginning of the piloting process. As 'Maersk Chattogram' attempted to maneuver past the anchored 'HR Turag' on its port side, it struck the latter's starboard stern. By the morning of May 3, 'Maersk Chattogram' was successfully brought to the JCB jetty at the outer port, while 'HR Turag' remained moored at coordinates 22° 10' N 091° 47' E. In response to the collision, port authorities established a controlled navigation corridor that led from the estuary to the New Mooring Container Terminal, temporarily halting general vessel traffic. To ensure safe navigation, each ship was assisted by three tugs, with additional support on standby, and operations were closely monitored via the Vessel Traffic Management System. This decisive action was necessary to avoid extended disruptions in cargo handling, as numerous import containers had been stranded since the initial incident on May 1. Both vessels collectively carried almost 2,900 import containers, with 'Maersk Chattogram' transporting 1,878 and 'HR Turag' approximately 1,000 containers. While both ships were slated for unloading, they had to forgo any export shipments due to their current unseaworthy status and the need for repairs following damage assessments. The collision caused significant damage to the aft section and starboard side of 'Maersk Chattogram', breaching the hull for several meters above the waterline; however, the engine and steering gear sustained no damage. Maersk Bangladesh is set to determine the next steps for the vessels following the unloading process. In light of the incident, security measures have been tightened, including the deployment of extra tugs on standby. The Mercantile Marine Department has convened a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, with a report expected within seven working days. Additionally, a joint investigation committee has been formed between the Department of Shipping and the Ministry of Shipping.
