C. Steinweg Group Ensures Compliance with Safety Standards Amid Ongoing Investigations

Sep 26, 2025 10:35

C. Steinweg Group, a Rotterdam-based transshipment powerhouse, has confirmed its adherence to all safety protocols mandated by regulatory authorities. This declaration came in the wake of a tragic incident involving the vessel 'Hiamgyam Spiriti', which occurred on September 22, 2025, resulting in a fatality. As of September 26, the ship remains docked as investigations unfold. In a statement on September 25, the port authority affirmed that C. Steinweg Group is diligently maintaining compliance with safety measures. The company reassured stakeholders that it conducts regular monitoring of safety practices. However, Rotterdam’s port alderman, Simons, expressed his concerns regarding ongoing safety issues and indicated the necessity for a discussion with Steinweg, following a serious meeting held earlier in the summer after another fatal accident. C. Steinweg Group has faced significant scrutiny, having recorded eight separate accidents in recent years. Notably, in June 2025, two employees tragically lost their lives while unloading steel plates. The Public Prosecution Service has initiated criminal investigations related to these fatalities, including those from earlier incidents. Currently, the Steinweg management is awaiting the findings of these inquiries while exploring potential safety enhancements. The company has committed to fully cooperating with the investigations to ensure accountability. Historically, the company has experienced several fatal incidents, including: - 2017: Hartel Terminal - A 17-year-old apprentice succumbed to injuries incurred when a forklift overturned. - 2018: Several locations encountered three fatalities in separate incidents within a short timeframe. - 2018: Marcor - An employee perished following an accident involving a grabber at Marcor transshipment operations. - June 19, 2025: Waalhaven (Pier 6) - Two individuals died, and two others sustained severe injuries during steel plate unloading operations. - September 22, 2025: Botlek Terminal (Terminal C) - A worker tragically lost their life in the hold of the ship, alongside several reports of serious injuries, the exact numbers of which remain undisclosed. As investigations progress, C. Steinweg Group is committed to prioritizing safety and implementing necessary changes to prevent future tragedies.

Tragic Accident Claims Life of Young Worker at Rotterdam's Botlek Terminal

Sep 24, 2025 10:24

In a heartbreaking incident on September 22, 2025, a 21-year-old man from Capelle aan den IJssel lost his life aboard the cargo vessel 'Huangyan Spirit' at the Botlek Terminal in Rotterdam. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. while unloading aluminum blocks at the C. Steinweg Group's facility located on Professor Gerbrandy Way. The victim, who was working alongside colleagues, was tragically found in the ship's cargo hold at a depth of 15 meters, buried beneath a load of aluminum blocks. Despite the swift response of emergency services, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. This incident adds to a concerning trend; in June, two workers died in similar circumstances while unloading steel plates, with two others sustaining serious injuries. One of those deceased was also a young employee. This pattern of fatalities at the Steinweg terminal has raised alarms, especially following the 2018 death of a student from the Shipping and Handling Centre (STC). In light of these events, the FNV Havens (Dutch Ports Federation) previously urged the Labour Inspectorate to take action regarding safety conditions at the transshipment company. Since 2017, there have been a total of eight fatalities at Steinweg, now including this latest tragedy. Currently, the 'Huangyan Spirit' remains docked in Rotterdam as of September 24.
