Fire Emergency Averted on Freighter 'Humber Sprinter' in Kiel Canal

May 05, 2026 11:37

On May 1, 2026, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the crew aboard the freighter 'Humber Sprinter', which was making its way from Riga to Immingham, reported an engine room fire while docked in the Kiel Canal's locks at Kiel-Holtenau. Fortunately, no visible smoke or flames were detected externally. The crew promptly took action, utilizing fire extinguishers to tackle the blaze that had ignited in a generator within the engine room. Their swift response was effective, successfully extinguishing the fire. Given the uncertain extent of the incident, local authorities dispatched the newly acquired fireboat 'FĂĽerschip' alongside additional crews from the North and Main fire stations. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus entered the engine room to conduct a thorough inspection. By around 6:40 p.m., the situation was under control, and the fire was officially declared extinguished, allowing fire personnel to vacate the premises. As a precaution, one lock chamber was temporarily closed during the incident. Following the conclusion of police investigations, 'Humber Sprinter' was relocated to the North Harbour, where it docked at Voith Quay. The German Maritime Professional Association subsequently imposed a sailing prohibition until a classification confirmation could be secured. After completing necessary repairs and inspections, the vessel was cleared to depart Kiel on May 5, with an estimated time of arrival back at its destination port on May 6.
