Heroic Rescue Efforts Save Crew of Sailboat Hydra 4
In the early hours of June 21, 2021, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a critical distress call was relayed by the British Coast Guard regarding the sailboat 'Hydra 4', which was suffering from significant water ingress and in danger of sinking. The vessel was located 22 nautical miles northeast of Barfleur, prompting immediate action from maritime authorities. The freighter 'Hardy', which was on its way from Bayonne to Hamburg and expected to arrive on June 28, responded quickly to the distress call, notifying CROSS Jobourg of its involvement in the rescue operation. The CROSS Jobourg also took swift action by broadcasting a MAYDAY RELAY message and deploying multiple Search and Rescue (SAR) resources to the vicinity of the stricken sailboat. Due to poor sea conditions, the freighter was unable to launch its lifeboat. Nevertheless, it successfully moored alongside 'Hydra 4' on its starboard side to assist the three crew members on board. Additionally, the ferry 'Mont Saint Michel' positioned itself downwind of the sailboat to offer further support. Once safely aboard the freighter, the three crew members were subsequently hoisted by the Caïman Marine helicopter and transported to the military schools of Querqueville for evaluation and assistance from the rescue team (SECMAR) and Cherbourg firefighters. Fortunately, none of the crew required hospitalization. As the lifeboat 'Amiral de Tourville' arrived on scene, the team determined that due to the conditions, a dewatering operation was not feasible before attempting to tow the sailboat. Observations by the SNSM crew indicated a slight iridescence on the water's surface during the sinking, which dissipated naturally due to local sea conditions. In response to the situation, an urgent notice to mariners (AVURNAV) was issued by the maritime operations center (COM) of the Channel and North Sea maritime prefecture to alert them about the wreckage and prevent further incidents.
