Emergency Medevac Operation Near Kochi Saves Injured Crew Member

Nov 23, 2021 17:53

In a dramatic turn of events, the container ship 'Hyundai Goodwill' had to alter its course on November 22, 2021, while en route from Hamburg to Busan. The vessel was approximately 250 nautical miles west of Kochi in the Laccadive Sea when a crew member from Myanmar, identified as Min Min Latt, aged 46, sustained critical injuries in an accident in the engine room. The incident left Latt bleeding from his right ear and experiencing severe shoulder pain. Upon receiving the distress alert from the ship's master on November 21, the Marine Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC), Kochi, was promptly notified via email about the urgent need for a helicopter evacuation. Given the vessel's considerable distance from shore, the crew was instructed to navigate towards Kochi at maximum speed. Meanwhile, specific medical guidelines were provided to the ship's master to monitor the injured crew member's condition. Simultaneously, the Coast Guard Headquarters in Kerala and Mahe activated their rescue operations, coordinating with multiple agencies, including the State administration, Customs, and Immigration, to ensure that all necessary clearances were in place. As night fell, a Coast Guard vessel equipped with a specialized medical team was dispatched, accompanied by a port tug to facilitate the safe transfer of the injured mariner. Upon arrival, the medical team conducted an initial assessment of Min Min Latt on board the 'Hyundai Goodwill' before transferring him to the port tug. By noon on November 23, the Coast Guard vessel and tug successfully made their way back to harbor, where Latt received immediate medical attention at the Medical Trust Hospital. The 'Hyundai Goodwill' resumed its journey the following morning, with an estimated arrival time in Busan set for December 5. This swift and coordinated response highlights the effectiveness of maritime emergency protocols and the dedication of the rescue teams involved.
