Container Ship Aids Flooding Fishing Vessel Near Golden Gate

May 14, 2014 11:27

On the evening of May 14, 2014, a dramatic rescue unfolded approximately 22 miles southwest of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge when the container ship "Hyundai Shanghai" and the fishing vessel "Drake" sprang into action following a distress call regarding the f/v "Leslie Jane," which was taking on water. The Coast Guard Sector San Francisco command center received the emergency report around 7:25 p.m. from the "Leslie Jane," indicating that the vessel was experiencing flooding at an undetermined rate. In response, the Coast Guard promptly dispatched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Golden Gate and a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. An urgent broadcast was sent to local mariners, requesting assistance. The "Drake" and "Hyundai Shanghai" quickly responded to the scene until the Coast Guard teams arrived. The helicopter crew took precautionary measures, lowering a life raft as a standby for any potential emergencies, while the flooding on the "Leslie Jane" was fortunately stabilized. Coast Guard personnel were later transferred aboard the distressed vessel to aid in dewatering efforts, as they towed the "Leslie Jane" to safety at a nearby pier.
