Heroic Rescue of 76 Migrants by Tanker Near Paleochora, Crete
Early on March 16, 2025, a remarkable humanitarian operation unfolded as the Agia Galini and Paleochora Port Authorities were alerted by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) of the Greek Coast Guard regarding a distressed vessel carrying migrants approximately 55 nautical miles south of Paleochora, Crete. The vessel, which was crammed with a total of 76 individuals—including 72 men, one woman, and three minors—was successfully reached by the tanker 'Ignacy Lukasiewicz'. The tanker maneuvered into the Bay of Messara, where the migrants were subsequently transferred to a Greek Coast Guard lifeboat. The group was then escorted to the port of Agia Galini, marking a safe rescue. Following their arrival, the migrants were taken to a temporary accommodation facility in Agia Chania, under the supervision of Coast Guard personnel. Meanwhile, the Central Port Authority of Chania has initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident.
