Emergency Medical Evacuation Near Barrow: Coast Guard Saves Lives
On the evening of September 14, 2016, a critical medical evacuation unfolded 80 miles southeast of Barrow, Alaska, as a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, stationed in Kotzebue, responded promptly to an urgent distress call. The France Rescue Coordination Center contacted the 17th Coast Guard District command center regarding a crew member from the fishing vessel 'Ile De Sein,' a 55-year-old man, who was exhibiting alarming symptoms consistent with a heart attack. After consultation with the on-duty flight surgeon, the decision for a medevac was made. The highly trained Jayhawk crew swiftly hoisted the individual from the vessel and transported him to the safety of Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow. At the time of the rescue operation, weather conditions included visibility of 11 miles, wind speeds of 10 mph, and cloud ceilings at approximately 2,000 feet, allowing for a successful mission.

A fire erupted in the generator compartment of the cable laying vessel 'Ile De Sein' on May 4, 2015, at approximately 7:30 p.m. while docked in Honolulu. Local firefighting units swiftly responded to the incident, managing to extinguish the blaze by around 10 p.m. Fortunately, all crew members were evacuated safely with no injuries reported.
