Tragic Loss: Filipino Sailor Succumbs to Suspected Malaria Aboard Bulk Carrier Elektra
On May 20, 2018, tragedy struck the crew of the bulk carrier 'Elektra' while docked in Swinoujscie, when a 40-year-old Filipino crew member was rushed to the hospital in grave condition. Despite intensive efforts by medical staff to revive him, including two resuscitation attempts, he unfortunately succumbed to his illness. Initial reports indicate that the sailor exhibited severe symptoms typically associated with malaria, such as high fever, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and excessive sweating. It is believed he may have contracted the disease while the vessel was in Buchanan, Liberia, from where 'Elektra' set sail on May 3. In a concerning turn of events, a second crew member began showing similar symptoms and was promptly taken to the hospital for evaluation. Medical professionals are currently monitoring all personnel who came into contact with the ill crew member. In a preventive measure, the 'Elektra' may face quarantine to assess the potential malaria outbreak following this tragic incident.
