MSC Ilona Adrift: Tugboat Towage Towards Salalah
On September 17, 2017, the container ship MSC Ilona found itself disabled and adrift in the Arabian Sea, approximately 350 miles southeast of its intended destination, Salalah, Oman. By the morning of September 26, the two vessels had advanced to a position 480 miles east of Salalah, having traveled more than 200 miles in a northeast direction since the initial loss of power. The tow is currently proceeding towards Salalah at a speed of three knots, with an estimated arrival date of October 1.
Pickup Truck Accidentally Dragged into Baltimore Harbor in Bizarre Mooring Incident
An unusual incident occurred on Saturday night at the Port of Baltimore when a miscommunication between the line handlers aboard the MSC Ilona containership and terminal 4 personnel led to a pickup truck being inadvertently dragged into the harbor. According to a source from gCaptain, the lineman responsible for securing the mooring lines attached a tag line to the bumper of his truck to facilitate the removal of the line from the bollard. In an unfortunate sequence of events, as he reversed to detach the line, the mate on the MSC Ilona operated the mooring winches, pulling the truck off the pier before the lineman could disconnect it. This bizarre mishap highlights the importance of clear communication in maritime operations.
