Ferry Stranded in San Francisco Bay After Engine Failure

Nov 08, 2017 11:12

On the night of November 6, 2017, the ferry 'Intintoli' experienced significant mechanical issues while navigating the waters of San Francisco Bay. The vessel, carrying 330 passengers, departed from San Francisco at 5:15 p.m. en route to Vallejo; however, just 45 minutes into the journey, both engines failed, leaving the ferry immobilized in the bay. Crew members made concerted efforts to rectify the situation, but unfortunately, their attempts were unsuccessful. During the ordeal, the snack bar remained operational, offering complimentary refreshments to passengers until supplies ran out. After enduring three hours adrift, a tugboat arrived on the scene to render assistance. Finally, at 9:45 p.m., a total of 4.5 hours after leaving San Francisco, the 'Intintoli' safely docked at Mare Island in Vallejo. This event underscores the challenges faced by maritime travel, even in well-frequented routes. Vallejo Ferry Service Suspended Following Oil Smell Report

Sep 21, 2016 20:55

On the evening of September 19, 2016, the Vallejo Ferry service in San Pablo Bay was put on hold as the Coast Guard and local emergency teams acted swiftly to investigate a potential oil spill. The alarm was raised around 8 p.m. when the crew aboard the ferry 'Intintoli' alerted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco through the Vessel Traffic Service about a strong odor of oil while traveling near the junction of Rodeo and Vallejo. Reports of an oil sheen on the water also emerged from crew members stationed at the Vallejo Coast Guard base and other ferries operating in the vicinity. In response, pollution specialists from both the Coast Guard and California Department of Fish and Wildlife were deployed to multiple locations around San Pablo Bay. Meanwhile, residents in Vallejo’s Glen Cove and Beverly Hills Parks neighborhoods reported a distinct oil-like smell, prompting several individuals to seek medical attention at a local hospital due to feeling unwell. As a precaution, city officials enacted a shelter-in-place order for several hours while firefighters investigated the area for possible natural gas leaks or other sources of the odor. Search efforts by Coast Guard boats near Vallejo and Mare Island failed to detect any visible sheen on the water, nor did aerial surveys conducted by a helicopter team at dawn on September 21. By the morning, ferry service in Vallejo was successfully resumed.
