On March 14, 2019, the tugboat 'Michelle Anne' sank in the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, prompting the US Coast Guard to lift a waterway closure between mile markers 224.5 to 226. The incident occurred when the tugboat became entangled in the anchor chain of the anchored vessel 'Iolcos Unity'. At approximately 11:00 a.m., the Coast Guard's New Orleans watchstanders received reports of the sinking while the 'Michelle Anne' was towing an empty dry cargo barge with four crew members on board. Fortunately, all crew members were able to escape to the barge and were later rescued by a nearby tug, with no reported injuries. The barge was successfully recovered as well. Following the incident, a team from the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Unit Baton Rouge identified an oil sheen in the water, raising alarm over a potential fuel spill of 18,500 gallons that the tug was carrying. An unknown quantity of oil had already leaked into the river. Due to hazardous river conditions, the Coast Guard along with OMI Environmental was managing the spill response from the shore. Remarkably, the entire operation was completed in just 30 minutes. At the time of servicing, the ship was carrying 67.514 metric tons of coal and was en route from Mobile to Rotterdam, with an estimated time of arrival scheduled for June 10.
