Ionic Anassa Marks Historic Crude Export at Libya's Zueitina Oil Terminal
In a significant development for Libya's oil sector, the tanker Ionic Anassa has successfully loaded the first export cargo of crude oil at the Zueitina oil terminal since late 2015, according to a port official. The Zueitina terminal, located in the oil crescent region of Libya, was one of three ports that have recently reopened, following the takeover by forces loyal to eastern commander Khalifa Haftar last month. The Ionic Anassa is set to transport 800,000 barrels of crude oil to China, signaling a positive shift in Libya's oil production capabilities. The reopening of Zueitina, along with Ras Lanuf and Es Sider, is pivotal as it helps restore Libya's oil output, which had plummeted to only a fraction of the pre-2011 levels of 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd). Prior to its current recovery, Zueitina had been closed since early November 2015, while Ras Lanuf had experienced shutdowns since December 2014. Although Ras Lanuf has resumed exports, Es Sider remains offline due to significant damage incurred during conflict. The revival of these key ports represents a hopeful step towards stabilizing Libya's critical oil industry.
