Courage on the High Seas: Merchant Vessels Join Forces to Rescue Yacht Crew

Sep 07, 2022 11:31

On September 6, 2022, the Tasman Sea became the backdrop for a dramatic rescue operation involving two merchant tankers, the 'Ionic Artemis' and 'Fairchem Aldebaran', as they heeded the call to aid the beleaguered crew of the sailing yacht 'Aviva'. Struck by intense weather conditions, the yacht had sustained damage that led to it taking on water. A family member of the crew alerted the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which took immediate action to coordinate a rescue with support from the Royal Australian Air Force and NSW Police. The ordeal began on September 5 when the two crew members, both in their 70s, activated an emergency beacon around 5 a.m. as 10-meter waves and fierce winds swamped their vessel. The AMSA quickly deployed its Melbourne-based Challenger rescue aircraft, which succeeded in establishing radio contact with the stranded sailors. In response, the Australian Defence Force dispatched several RAAF aircraft to maintain communication and monitor the situation. By the afternoon of September 6, the 'Aviva' was located approximately 164 nautical miles east of Lord Howe Island. As night fell, the NSW Police vessel 'Nemesis' reached the scene at 11 p.m., successfully rescuing the two men and facilitating their transport to Sydney via Lord Howe Island. The AMSA expressed gratitude to the 'Nemesis', the merchant vessels, and the Australian Defence Force for their swift and effective collaboration in this life-saving mission.
