Emergency Response Activated at Papeete’s Moto Uta Port Due to Damaged Containers
On February 23, 2017, an urgent response was implemented at the Moto Uta port in Papeete after two containers carrying potentially flammable materials sustained damage. The containers, which arrived on the vessel 'Irenes Remedy' from Balboa, prompted the establishment of a crisis unit to manage the situation effectively. A designated security zone was immediately set up to ensure the safety of port operations. The first container was found to have a leak, raising concerns about methanol spilling, while the second container, which contained gas, suffered damage during loading and unloading activities overnight. To mitigate risks, officials decided to remove the first leaking container from the site. In an effort to cool the affected containers, seawater was sprayed onto them. Local authorities received additional support from state civil security services to thoroughly evaluate the situation. Notably, the damaged containers were not originally intended for distribution within French Polynesia.
