Iris I Cargo Ship Collides with Bunker at Wilhelmshaven Sea Lock
On August 28, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Iris I', while making its way from Eikefet, experienced a significant incident at the port of Wilhelmshaven. The ship, loaded with grit, struck a bunker at the outer head of the west chamber of the sea lock. The collision resulted in substantial damage to the bulbous bow of the vessel, rendering the bow tip crushed. Fortunately, the sea lock itself suffered only minor damage and continued to function normally without impairment. Initial investigations conducted by the police revealed that the incident was attributed to an operating error by the 48-year-old captain, which led to an engine failure. Despite the presence of a port pilot onboard, the allision could not be avoided. In response to the situation, the Wilhelmshaven Water Police initiated an investigation into the incident. As of September 5, 2025, the 'Iris I' remained stationary in the port, pending further assessment and actions regarding the incident. Iris I Detained in Halmstad Due to Safety Violations
The 'Iris I' faced a temporary operational ban in Halmstad after a thorough inspection by the Swedish Transport Agency following its arrival from Falkenberg on January 10, 2025. During this port state control, inspectors identified approximately 15 critical deficiencies, including serious violations regarding working conditions and fire safety protocols. These issues necessitated the vessel's retention at the Halmstad quay while they were being rectified. After a follow-up inspection on the afternoon of January 29, the Swedish Transport Agency confirmed that all previously noted deficiencies had been successfully addressed. As a result, the 'Iris I' is now cleared to depart, with its next move scheduled for February 4. Notably, the vessel is currently without cargo and has no plans to load anything before its departure.
