Rudder Failure Strikes 'Conmar Avenue' in Kiel Canal

Aug 11, 2016 09:24

On August 11, 2016, at 01:30 a.m., the container ship 'Conmar Avenue' experienced a rudder malfunction while navigating the Kiel Canal, en route from Hamburg to Kronshtadt, near the Levensau road bridge. Prompt action was taken at 01:45 a.m. when two tugs were dispatched to assist the vessel in distress. The first tug on the scene was the SFK-tug 'Stein', which arrived at approximately 02:30 a.m. and commenced towing operations, connecting to the vessel's stern. With a towing speed of 0.5 to 1 knot, 'Stein' began moving the 'Conmar Avenue' towards the canal locks in Holtenau. At 02:55 a.m., the tug 'Holtenau' joined the operation to provide additional support. The convoy successfully navigated into the northern lock at 04:20 a.m. and by 04:45 a.m., the 'Conmar Avenue' was securely moored at the Scheer Port of Kiel for necessary repairs. Notably, the incident had minimal impact on the overall ship traffic within the canal.
