Coast Guard Responds to Medical Emergency at Sea Near Hatteras
In a rapid response operation, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully medevaced a woman suffering from a serious hand injury aboard the 'Ivar Reefer', which was navigating from Cristobal to Colombo, approximately 57 miles east of Hatteras, North Carolina. The incident unfolded early in the morning on February 27, 2022, when watchstanders at the Coast Guard District Five Command Center in Portsmouth received an urgent call just before 4 a.m. The vessel reported that a crew member had sustained a severe injury while working in the engine room and was in need of immediate medical attention. In response, the command center dispatched an aircrew from Air Station Elizabeth City, utilizing an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. The aircrew rendezvoused with the 'Ivar Reefer' offshore, successfully hoisting the injured crew member aboard. Following the medevac, the injured individual was flown to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital in Norfolk for further medical care.
