A fire sparked in the evening hours of December 15, 2019, aboard the bulk carrier 'Ecomar G.O.' while docked at the Kooragang Coal Terminal in Newcastle, Australia. The incident originated in a storage compartment containing food and various supplies within the ship's superstructure. The vessel, which had arrived from Rizhao early that morning at 5:10 a.m. to load coal, faced an intense blaze that overwhelmed the crew's initial firefighting efforts. Responding to the emergency at 8 p.m. were teams from NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Ambulance, Port Waratah Coal Services, and the Port Authority. The fire was ultimately brought under control and extinguished by 9:30 p.m. Three crew members were treated for smoke inhalation, with paramedics assessing the health of all 22 crew members aboard.
