Tanker and Bulk Carrier Collide in Manila Bay, Significant Damage Reported
A notable maritime incident occurred on April 7, 2021, at 9:14 PM LT in Manila Bay when the oil tanker 'Rich Rainbow' collided with the bulk carrier 'Ivy Alliance'. The collision took place approximately three miles north of Cavite City. The 'Rich Rainbow' was departing the anchorage where it had been moored since the morning, on its way from Zhuhai carrying a cargo of gasoline. At the same time, the 'Ivy Alliance', which was transporting coal from Kalimantan to Zhenjiang, had already passed Manila. However, it turned back in the morning, making its approach to Manila Bay. The aftermath of the collision left both vessels severely damaged: the 'Rich Rainbow' sustained a breach measuring 20 meters long on the starboard side above the waterline, while the 'Ivy Alliance' experienced a breach of approximately 10 to 15 meters at the foreship's starboard side, also above the waterline. Following the collision, the 'Rich Rainbow' dropped anchor at coordinates 14° 32.12' N 120° 52.07' E, and the 'Ivy Alliance' anchored at 4° 31.65' N 120° 51.81' E. As of April 8, both vessels remained anchored in their respective positions. The incident has raised concerns regarding maritime safety in the busy shipping lanes of Manila Bay.
