On September 12, 2014, a swift medical evacuation took place involving the bulk carrier 'Porto Leone' anchored approximately 6 nautical miles offshore from Port Elizabeth. At around 9:45 PM, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Port Elizabeth volunteers were activated in response to an urgent medical request from the ship’s agent. They were alerted to a 47-year-old Burmese sailor who was experiencing severe chest and abdominal pains potentially due to inhaling hazardous chemical vapors, likely hydrochloric acid. The vessel had previously docked in Durban after departing from Spain, and was awaiting entry to Port Elizabeth. The NSRI deployed their rescue vessel, the 'Spirit of Toft,' alongside an EC Government Health EMS paramedic. Upon arrival at the scene, the paramedic assessed the patient, who was found to be walking and responsive. After receiving initial treatment and stabilization, the sailor was safely transferred onto the rescue craft. He was then transported back to shore and subsequently moved to a hospital via an EMS ambulance for further medical care, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

In an exciting development, COSCO Corporation (Singapore) Limited has announced the successful delivery of the bulk carrier named 'PORTO LEONE'. The vessel, designed with a deadweight tonnage of 64,000 DWT, was constructed by COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co., Ltd, a subsidiary under the COSCO Shipyard Group Co., Ltd, in which COSCO holds a 51% stake. The handover to European buyer LOMAR was formalized recently through the signing of delivery documents between COSCO Zhoushan and the purchaser. The 'PORTO LEONE' boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 199.9 meters in length overall (LOA), 32.26 meters in width, and 18.5 meters in depth, making it a significant addition to LOMAR's fleet.
