Fuel Leak from 'Jag' Tanker Sparks Pollution Emergency at Istanbul's Ahırkapı Anchorage
In the early hours of February 11, 2025, the tanker 'Jag' was responsible for a significant oil pollution incident at Ahırkapı Anchorage, located off the coast of Istanbul. The vessel, which had docked on February 10 at coordinates 40° 57' N 028° 45' E, experienced a fuel leak during bunkering operations with another tanker named 'Gökdeniz' (IMO: 9373254). In response to the crisis, Coastal Safety authorities promptly dispatched their lifeboats 'Kıyı Emniyeti 3' and 'Kıyı Emniyeti 4', along with an environmental barge and the tug 'Mehmetçik' to mitigate the pollution. Rescue teams worked diligently to cleanse the contaminated water surface. The 'Jag', registered in Liberia since 2023, has undergone several ownership changes and is currently managed by the Indian firm Rhine Marine Services. Notably, this tanker has a history of operating in the Russian oil trade, having transported a cargo from Primorsk, Russia, to the Paranagua port in October 2024. During its last inspection in Aqaba, conducted in 2023, the vessel was found to have 12 deficiencies, leading to a two-day detention due to issues including a non-functional emergency generator and inadequate fire door functions. Concerns about cleanliness in the engine room and the presence of oily mixtures were also raised. Its three previous inspections, all carried out in Russia, similarly reported various deficiencies. Winson Group Moves Swiftly to Flip Newly Acquired Tankers
In a surprising twist in the maritime market, Winson Group's shipping division has swiftly placed two recently acquired vessels on the market. This rapid move showcases the Taiwanese company's agility, especially as one of the ships is yet to undergo a name change. Historically, Winson has been conservative in its asset transactions, only parting with one ship over the past five years. Earlier this month, Winson procured two older LR tankers from fellow Taiwanese shipping firm, Formosa Plastics. The ships, formerly known as Formosa Falcon (now renamed Sino Pacific) and FPMC P Alpine, were acquired at an attractive price of $7 million each. Formosa Plastics was eager to divest these vessels, having actively sought buyers for several months. Currently, Winson is marketing these ships with a new price of $8 million each, indicating a strategic profit-making move in the competitive shipping sector.
Formosa Sells Two LR1 Tankers to Winson in Strategic Deal
In a significant transaction, Formosa has finalized the sale of its two LR1 tankers, the 'Formosa Falcon' built in 2005 and 'Fpmc P Alpine' constructed in 2004, to Winson for a total of USD 7 million. This decision was made following an unsuccessful attempt to offload the vessels to a Chinese buyer for USD 8.2 million. The move highlights Formosa's strategic pivot in the competitive tanker market.
