Multiple Maritime Rescues Near Calais: A Critical Response to Distress Calls
On November 8, 2021, the CROSS Gris-Nez received urgent information about a distressed vessel off the coast of Calais. In response, a semi-rigid craft from the maritime gendarmerie was deployed, successfully rescuing six individuals who were subsequently transported to the port of Calais, where they received assistance from the border police. Following this, during the night of November 9, the CROSS Gris-Nez was alerted to multiple vessels in peril near Calais. The rescue vessel 'Jean Ango' located one of the struggling boats, which was then taken over by the lifeboat 'SNS 077 Notre Dame du Risban'. This operation resulted in the safe transfer of 32 individuals, including four women and a child, to the port of Calais. In a parallel effort, the lifeboat 'SNS 087-Jean Bart 2' rescued 36 migrants, successfully bringing them back to the port of Dunkirk. Meanwhile, 'SNS 076-President Jacques Huret' found another vessel carrying 44 individuals. They were safely transferred to the 'Abeille Languedoc' and taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Additionally, the 'Abeille Languedoc' conducted another operation, rescuing yet another 42 castaways, who were also brought to Boulogne-sur-Mer. The 'Jean Ango' continued its vigilant watch, aiding another 12 castaways en route back to Calais. The patrol vessel 'Cormoran' participated in two distinct rescue missions, managing to recover 70 individuals, who were ultimately taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. This extensive series of operations underscores the vital role of maritime services in ensuring the safety of those at sea, as they respond to distress signals with determination and promptness.
