Investigation Underway for Missing Third Officer from Jiaolong Spirit
The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Third Officer Cristito M. Acosta has caught the attention of Human Rights at Sea, who recently published a case study highlighting the details of this ongoing situation. Acosta vanished without a trace from the oil tanker 'Jiaolong Spirit' on April 23, 2020, while he was in the midst of a six-month employment contract. Having boarded the vessel on February 22 in New Orleans, Cristito was two months into his tenure with Jiaolong Spirit LLC, with the ship being operated by Teekay Shipping through Teekay Marine (Singapore) PTE Ltd. At the time of his disappearance, Cristito held the position of Junior Third Officer, marking this as his first assignment on the Jiaolong Spirit. Previously, he had served on other vessels including the Beijing Spirit and Erik Spirit, starting his career as a deck cadet in June 2017. In a bid to raise awareness about Cristito's situation and push for a thorough investigation, his family has initiated a social media campaign primarily utilizing Facebook and conducted in Tagalog, which is the main language in the Philippines. They reached out to Human Rights at Sea for support in amplifying their voice and ensuring their concerns are acknowledged publicly. In response to the family's plea, Human Rights at Sea has been in direct communication with Teekay's CEO in Vancouver. The organization reports that an independent third-party investigation is now underway, aiming to meticulously review the circumstances surrounding Cristito's disappearance and engage with his family throughout the process. Human Rights at Sea has expressed their satisfaction with Teekay’s willingness to collaborate constructively regarding the article and the situation at hand.
