Heroic Rescue by USNS John Ericsson Near Solomon Islands

May 19, 2011 12:14

On May 18, 2011, the crew of the USNS John Ericsson, with IMO number 8511512, accomplished a remarkable feat of heroism by rescuing five stranded individuals adrift in a small boat in the Solomon Sea. The civil service mariners were engaged in routine operations when they received an urgent call late on May 17 from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers of Australia and Papua New Guinea, alerting them to a missing commercial vessel. Early the following morning, around 8 a.m. local time, the crew spotted a small boat with five distressed people aboard signaling for help, despite challenging weather conditions characterized by heavy rain squalls. Captain Richard Kirk, in command of the vessel, acted swiftly, directing the ship to cautiously approach the stranded craft. Despite the limited visibility, the crew secured lines to the unfortunate boat and assisted the sailors aboard the John Ericsson, where they were provided with essential medical care, food, and water. Having spent a harrowing two nights and three days lost at sea, the five mariners were found 35 miles offshore while they were navigating between Nissian and Bougainville islands and had succumbed to dehydration and fatigue. In addition to rescuing the sailors, the crew of the John Ericsson expertly salvaged the small vessel, utilizing a crane to lift it from the water and transport it safely alongside the ship. The mission concluded with a successful transit to Bougainville Island, where the rescued sailors and their boat were safely repatriated ashore.
