Working Conditions Aboard the John-G-Munson

The SS John G. Munson, a 26,260dwt bulk carrier managed by Great Lakes Fleet, has successfully concluded its inaugural season as a diesel-powered vessel following a significant oil-to-water lubricated tailshaft conversion executed by Thordon Bearings last year. This pivotal conversion, which took place in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, was an integral aspect of an expansive 12-month power transformation project facilitated by Fincantieri’s Bay Shipbuilding yard. Originally built in 1952 as a self-unloader, the ship underwent a comprehensive overhaul that involved the replacement of its steam propulsion system with an advanced, energy-efficient medium-speed diesel configuration. Key upgrades also included the complete removal and installation of the tailshaft, stern tube, propeller, and hub. Thordon Bearings contributed essential components, including its COMPAC water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings, a specialized Water Quality Package to ensure the optimal conditioning of the lubricating water, and the innovative ThorShield shaft protection system.
