Ferry Accident in Málaga: Mechanical Failure Leads to Collision with Pleasure Boats
On the evening of February 16, 2015, the ferry "Juan J. Sister," while making its way from Melilla, encountered mechanical difficulties that resulted in a collision with Pier Muelle Uno as it entered the port of Málaga. The vessel, equipped with a prominent bulb, struck two moored pleasure boats, notably the 10-meter Furia 34 yacht named "La Huida," which sustained significant damage and took on a considerable amount of water. Emergency services were dispatched to pump water out of the distressed yacht. Fortunately, despite the accident causing damage to the quay and the boats, no injuries were reported. The "Juan J. Sister" docked at Canovas (Muelle 3) at approximately 8 p.m. The scheduled 11 p.m. departure was subsequently canceled, impacting around 210 passengers. In response to the disruption, the Maritime Station remained open throughout the night to accommodate those stranded by the cancellation, allowing them to stay in the city until further arrangements could be made. Authorities quickly mobilized technicians to investigate the root cause of the accident, while divers were called in for a thorough inspection of the ferry's hull. After the incident, the ferry was shifted to the Romero Dobledo quay around midnight to facilitate the inspection process.
