Successful Recovery of Second Liebherr Crane From Jumbo Vision Incident
On March 9, the maritime community witnessed a significant milestone as the recovery operation for the two Liebherr mobile cranes, which were lost overboard from the ‘Jumbo Vision’, reached completion. The sheerleg crane ‘Hebo Lift 9’ successfully retrieved the second 400-ton crane from the depths of the water. Earlier, on March 8, most of the wreckage associated with the first crane was also cleared from the site. The renowned manufacturer Liebherr is currently evaluating the salvaged components to determine if they can be refurbished for future use. Beginning midday on March 10, divers commenced a thorough survey of the port basin floor to identify any remaining debris or pollutants. If nothing is found, the oil barrier that was put in place can be removed, allowing the port basin to resume normal operations. Throughout the salvage process, a designated safety zone was established around the affected area to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. Rostock Salvage Operation of Cranes Underway as Investigation Continues
The salvage operation for the Liebherr cranes that sank at Rostock Port is actively ongoing, while authorities continue their investigation into the incident. So far, there is no evidence to support claims that the cranes aboard the 'Jumbo Vision' came into contact with the Liebherr cranes. Eyewitness reports initially suggested that one of the harbor cranes onboard was tipped due to a crane from the ship, leading to the subsequent fall of another crane overboard. However, Jumbo has disputed these claims, asserting that the Liebherr cranes had already been dislodged prior to the incident. Furthermore, the flanking cranes on the ship remain undamaged. This complex accident has created challenges in determining a definitive cause, consequently prolonging the investigation process. As repairs were undertaken onboard the 'Jumbo Vision' and given class approval, the vessel was permitted to depart Rostock on February 20, setting its course from Las Palmas to Tema, expected to arrive on March 9. Initially, Hebo Maritiem Service's floating crane, 'Hebo Lift 9', aimed to leave Rotterdam on February 19 to assist in the salvage efforts, but adverse weather in the North Sea delayed departure until February 26. The 'Hebo Lift 9' finally arrived on site on March 5, whereupon the primary objective was the recovery of the two 50-meter long lattice booms, each weighing 35 tonnes. Before the floating crane's arrival, specialists from Baltic Taucherei- und Bergungsbetrieb Rostock GmbH successfully detached the lattice booms using the crane vessel 'Baltic Lift', which boasts a maximum lifting capacity of 200 tonnes. The first boom was lifted on March 3, followed by the second on March 5. After the retrieval, the boom components were cleaned, transported, and initially stored at Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH facilities. The recovery of the cranes themselves will be undertaken by 'Hebo Lift 9' in the upcoming days. The plan includes lifting both cranes onto the quay simultaneously, utilizing the crane's impressive 800-tonne lifting capability. Preparatory steps, such as installing forerunners and securing the lifting gear, are expected to extend the recovery time to several days, with the first crane anticipated to be pulled out on March 8 and the second following, pending the clearance of debris from the storage area. The lifting process for the booms and the securing of lifting shackles by Baltic divers were carefully synchronized with the arrival of 'Hebo Lift 9' to minimize any disruption to harbor traffic, which had already been affected by the oil barrier deployed in response to leaked hydraulic oil and diesel fluids from the submerged cranes. While divers have cleared out the tanks, the precautionary oil barrier remains in place. Additional updates, including photos and videos, can be found in related reports.
Hebo Lift 9 Mobilizes to Retrieve Lost Cranes from Jumbo Vision
On March 5, 2023, the sheerleg vessel 'Hebo Lift 9' docked in Rostock to commence the recovery operation for two Liebherr cranes that were lost overboard from the 'Jumbo Vision'. The 'Jumbo Vision' had set sail from Rotterdam just five days prior to the recovery effort. The operation is expected to start on March 6, following preliminary underwater work conducted by divers who have partially disassembled the crane wreckage resting on the seabed of the port. One of the crane booms has already been successfully raised, while efforts to recover the second boom were also planned for March 5. The primary objectives for the 'Hebo Lift 9' include lifting the engine houses alongside the chassis and tower, a complex task anticipated to take several days to complete.
