In a remarkable display of maritime heroism, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the US Coast Guard Air Station Sitka successfully conducted a medevac on September 1, 2017. The operation took place approximately 62 miles south of Yakutat, where a 67-year-old crew member from the tugboat 'Justine Foss' was in critical need of medical assistance due to a suspected detached retina. The urgent alert was transmitted to the Coast Guard 17th District watchstanders by Health Force Partners, prompting rapid action. After receiving the initial report, the watchstanders consulted the duty flight surgeon, who prioritized the case for medevac within a six-hour window. This directed the attention to Coast Guard Sector Juneau, which set in motion the deployment of the Jayhawk crew. Despite challenging conditions, including wind speeds of 15 mph and significant 6-8 foot seas, the helicopter crew swiftly maneuvered to the vessel's location. With professionalism and precision, they successfully rescued the crewman and transported him safely to a Security Aviation aircrew in Sitka for further medical treatment.
