Medevac Operation Off the Coast of Cape Town

Apr 21, 2013 13:43

On April 20, 2013, at 8:30 a.m., the NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew sprang into action after receiving an urgent call regarding the vessel "Patriot SW", which was en route from Cameroon to Singapore, with Cape Town as its last port of call. A Burmese crew member aboard the ship was reportedly unconscious and displaying symptoms of a high fever. Responding swiftly, the rescue boat "Spirit of Toft," accompanied by a paramedic from Gaurdmed, navigated to meet the distressed ship in the busy shipping lanes. Upon boarding, the medical team discovered that the 43-year-old man from Myanmar was in critical condition, initially suspected of suffering from Yellow Fever. The team promptly transferred him to the rescue boat and expedited his return to Port Elizabeth. Following the medevac, he was transported by Gaurdmed ambulance to the hospital, where further examinations revealed that he was suffering from Malaria rather than Yellow Fever. Despite this clearer diagnosis, the man remained in critical condition as he underwent treatment.
